Nearly 25 per cent admit they can’t control holiday spending

One in four Canadians say whether they set a budget or not, they feel helpless when trying to keep their spending in check at this time of year.

Of those in that group, 68 per cent admit it reflects how they handle their finances throughout the rest of the year.

Todd Sigurdson who is a financial planning expert with the Investors Group, which commissioned the Environics survey, says it appears many people cave into the demands of family and friends.

Sigurdson says the best way to enjoy the holidays is to establish a budget and stick to it.

Sixty two per cent of Canadians say they are not concerned with overspending during the holidays.

As for how people save money at this time of year, 68 per cent say they shop in advance, 20 per cent say they purchase gently-used or second hand holiday gifts, and 17 per cent admit they re-gift.
