The Salvation Army reports donations so far this holiday season are running behind last year, which isn’t good considering the 2012 campaign also came up short of the one million dollar fund raising goal.
Captain Pam Goodyear hopes the warmer weather in the forecast will help fill their kettles which are being staffed by volunteers around the city.
Some suggest the drop in donations is a result of what’s called donor fatigue, especially this year after the outpouring of generosity following June’s historic flood in southern Alberta followed by the killer typhoon in the Philippines.
The Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations has been studying the impact of the flood on charitable giving.
Geoff Braun who is the Director of Policy and Research with the CCVO tells 660News so far they have not found any conclusive evidence , but anecdotally they have heard from some charities which claim they are running up against what they call donor fatigue.
Braun says their study is far from complete and they expect to release more in 2014.
He says when you run a charity there are no guarantees you are going to reach your fund raising goals and most organizations have plans in place to deal with possible shortfalls.
