With winter seemingly here to stay, the Calgary Fire Department is out with a reminder to keep ice safety in mind when around frozen lakes, ponds and rivers.
Public Information Officer Carol Henke says there have been several recent incidents of people venturing out onto frozen lakes or ponds and it’s very concerning.
She says because we have extreme temperature fluctuations in Calgary, ice conditions can be quite dangerous.
The fire dept recommends only skating on outdoor areas designated by the city, keep a safe distance from river banks and lake shores and don’t walk on ice-covered lakes or ponds because it’s always difficult to assess if the ice is thick enough to hold your weight.
If you do fall through ice and into water, the fire department says try to stay calm, keep your head out of the water, remember to call for help and keep your hands on the ice shelf.
If you see a person or an animal fall through the ice, call 9-1-1 immediately and do not attempt to rescue them yourself.
