How are you getting home after celebrating?

Getting a cab at 2 a.m. the morning on New Year’s is a tough proposition, so what are your options?

If you don’t have a designated driver, or haven’t arranged for someone to pick you up, you will have to take the bus, C-train or walk.

But be aware, you may have to leave early.  Transit is running on a regular Tuesday schedule, except some extra trains and buses leaving downtown at 12:30 a.m.

In comparison, major routes in Edmonton will be running until 3:30, in Vancouver the sky train has service until after 2 a.m., and in Toronto, you can hop on well into the wee hours.

Councillor Shane Keating, who’s on the transportation committee, acknowledges cab service could be better, especially on busy nights like New Year’s Eve.

“I just want to make sure we look at all options. And we’re always trying to improve the regulated system of the taxi service and we had a study done not long ago that gave us some recommendations,” says Keating. “We’ve implemented those [recommendations] but now we have to sit down and look at what other tweeks or what other systems we can do to make the service that more accessible to everybody.”

Associated Cab President Roger Richard says if the roads are good, you should be able to get a taxi, but you will need patience. He says if you’ve booked a cab and find another way home, please call and cancel, so someone else can have that car.
