Alberta Transportation to permanently fix Highway 8 / Elbow River bridge

Drivers who travel across the Highway 8 bridge over the Elbow River will have to slow it down.
Crews with Alberta Transportation are moving in to repair 100 metres of river bank that was washed away during June’s flood.
Alberta Transportation’s Nancy Beasley-Hosker said they can do the work in the winter months.
“One of the reasons that it is, is so that the bank and the bridge will be protected once we get the spring thaw,” she said, adding it essentially makes the temporary repairs that were done shortly after the flood permanent.
“What they’ll be doing is building on what was done initially as just an interim measure to ensure that there wasn’t any further damage as a result of ongoing water through the Elbow River.”
The cost to make sure the foundation of the bridge isn’t damaged by snow melt or spring runoff is $800,000.
About 2,100 cubic metres of rock is being brought in.
The work won’t shut down the road, but the speed limit in the construction zone will be reduced, as well, signs and possible flag persons will be in place.
