Thirty still missing, five dead in massive fire in eastern Quebec

An overnight fire is under control at a Quebec seniors’ home where part of the destroyed building has collapsed.

Six fire stations sent crew and equipment to the scene, but say thick ice is hampering the recovery effort in L’Isle Verte, 250 kilometres north of Quebec City.

According to local news outlets, the death toll now sits at five, with at least 30 still unaccounted for.

Firefighters were able to save about 20 people and 13 were taken to hospital with unknown injuries.

Local officials fear the number of fatalities will climb, because many of the people unaccounted for had limited movement and were confined to wheelchairs and walkers.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
