Squash player thanks rec centre staff for saving his life

A routine squash game on January 6th for a 53-year-old Calgary man was very nearly his last as Ayaz Kara suffered a cardiac arrest in a Mount Royal locker room.
Kara returned to the campus recreational centre Friday to thank the staff who saved his life.
A three-game-a week player, Kara said he was up 4-2 when he couldn’t catch his breath in his first game of the New Year.
In the locker room moments later, his heart stopped beating and his lungs stopped working.
“I think I was at the right place at the right time, with all the training that happens here. The doctors and the nurses told me if I wasn’t here I wouldn’t be talking right now,” said Kara.
Staff at the Mount Royal University Rec Centre quickly found Kara, applied CPR and an AED machine.
Friday, Kara thanked the MRU staffers who saved his life and donated five more defibrillators to be placed wherever EMS officials deem fit.
