High River Counselling Centre opens downtown

A new counselling centre is available in a southern Alberta community that could definitely use it.
The High River Counselling Centre opened in a downtown location today, focused on providing mental health support to residents for scheduled walk-in sessions with two full-time experts and others that will come down from Calgary depending on demand.
Associate Minister for Regional Recovery and Reconstruction in High River and Public Safety, Rick Fraser, said initial discussions of the facility started a year ago and after the flood, it’s a relief to have it for those who need it.
“It’ll be a permanent place to help people recover emotionally, spiritually and certainly mentally, from the disaster that everybody’s gone through in High River and surrounding areas,” he said.
“Whether it’s rebuilding their home or regular day things that would normally happen in a normal community, so it’s a great facility where people will be able to come and have a conversation of how to rebuild.”
The centre will also offer free counselling to all High River and surrounding area residents affected by the flood until March 31, 2015.
Fraser added they’ll see what kind of customer base they get over the opening weeks and months and potentially look at hiring more full-time staff if necessary.
