Winter Carnival is underway in Canmore, this weekend.
Coincidentally, the festival picks up steam this coming Thursday with the opening of the Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Tulene Steiestol of Canmore Tourism tells 660News they have their own athletes village for the Olympics.
“It’s going to have a giant, big screen tv so that we can watch all the activities from the Games,” says Steiestol. “We have a lot of athletes from Canmore that live and also train here. So we can be cheering them on as well as all the other Canadian athletes. We’re going to have evening movies for families. And there’s going to be some food vendors set up and also a beer garden.”
Thursday also marks the start of the popular Snow Tracks event.
“So Main Street for two blocks is covered in snow that comes down from the Nordic Centre and people can cross country ski, and there’s different events going on,” adds Steiestol. “That’s from February 6th right through to the 9th.”
But perhaps the most spectator friendly event takes place next Saturday with the Kid and Mutt Races.
“On Saturday, we’ve got kids literally attached to toboggans with one dog that’s pulling them down the Main Street,” says Steiestol. “It’s a bit of a race that’s going on for some of these brave kids that are willing to drive one of the sleds.”
Winter Carnival in Canmore runs until February 23rd, the day the Winter Olympics in Sochi come to an end.
