New film studio for Alberta

After decades of failed projects and dashed dreams, Alberta’s film industry is celebrating the provinces announcement that a new film studio will be up and running by summer of 2015.

Culture Minister Heather Klimchuk made the announcement Tuesday at the SAIT campus.

The minister says a proposal from Calgary Economic Development was the most robust, and gets the green light to go ahead with a facility aimed at extending Calgary’s film production season.

The facility will feature two purpose-built sound stages with the ability to subdivide the larger studio, as well as warehouse and workshop space.

The projected cost is nearly 23-million dollars with the scheduled opening set for next summer.

The building’s location has not yet been announced.
