Watch out for online dating scams

For those who may turn to online dating to find a Valentine’s date, the Southern Alberta and East Kootenay Better Business Bureau is urging caution.

Leah Brownridge, marketing and communications coordinator with the BBB, said the internet is a place where people have to watch for scammers and there are a few things that could be warning signs.

“They like to say ‘I love you’ way too quickly.  They may catch you off guard, it may be a red flag because you may not know them very well but they’re really trying to get to your heart and your affections and win you over very quickly,” said Brownridge.

She said once they capture a person’s heart, their ultimate plan is to get money, often making a person feel guilty with a sympathetic story.
