Mayor Naheed Nenshi is making a plea to federal finance minister Jim Flaherty to fund transit projects in Calgary.
The mayor was reacting to cities like Windsor and Montreal receiving millions of dollars to build bridges, and Toronto getting cash for a new subway line in the new federal budget.
He argued Calgary deserves a fair shake too.
“The answer Minister Flaherty gave when asked ‘why do you have special funding for the Scarborough subway line in Toronto?’ is ‘they asked’,” Nenshi said. “So, Minister Flaherty, we’ve got $12.9-billion of unfunded transit infrastructure in Calgary. Consider this an ask.”
Nenshi said we shouldn’t be reducing things to a zero sum game between municipalities, and what we all need is long term sources of funding.
