Calgary’s homeless population is holding steady

The latest count of people living on the streets in the city is now pegged at 3,500, that’s the same figure it was back in 2011.
Andrea Ranson with the Calgary Homeless Foundation says keeping the homeless population in check when thousands of people continue to come to the city seeking employment is quite an achievement.
Ranson says before the initiative to end homeless was launched back in 2008, Calgary’s homeless population was increasing by 35 per cent every 2 years.
She says in the past six years they have managed to find affordable accommodation for 5,000 people.
The Homeless Foundation remains confident it will be able to achieve it’s goal to end homelessness by 2018, with the addition of more affordable housing units and targeting specific programs to help those who fall into the chronic homeless category.
