660News Pet Talk

If your dog or cat is scratching, licking, rubbing or chewing its skin excessively, it could be allergic to something.

Last week we talked about ear infections in dogs.   One of the most common causes is that your dog could have an allergy.

While ear infections are not as common in cats, like dogs, they can also suffer from allergic skin disease.

C.A.R.E. Centre Medical Director Dr. Danny Joffe says the symptoms are similar to a human’s:   irritated skin and rashes.  There can also be scabbing and even infections on a pet’s skin.

“They tend to get allergic reactions on the limbs, especially on the paws but also in the ears.  Both inhaled allergies or atopy, which is environmental allergens, and food allergies,” says Joffe.

He says your vet can help guide you through the steps to determine which issue your pet is having and even prescribe special food to identify the allergen.

Pet Talk is heard every Tuesday at 12:49p, 3:49p, and 7:49p on 660News.
