One man dead in police shooting on Deerfoot Trail

One man is dead, and a woman remains in critical conditiion in the hospital, after a shooting incident involving Calgary police last night on Deerfoot Trail.
Constable Laura Bailly tells 660News, the culmination of the incident took place on Southbound Deerfoot.
“The incident occurred earlier this evening where shots were reported fired in the Copperfield area,” Bailey said. “A Hawcs helicopter followed a vehicle at MacKenzie Lake Boulevard, by Southbound Deerfoot where the vehicle was stopped. At that time, shots were fired by police. No officers were injured. It’s confirmed that one male is deceased at the scene, and a female — in critical condition — has been taken to hospital.”
At last report, the woman remains in life-threatening condition.
660News reporter Ian Campbell drove by the scene shortly after the incident.
“It’s hard to see from the angle that we were at,” Campbell said. “They aren’t letting anyone close to this at this point. I tried slowing down as much as I could on the Deerfoot. The doors again were wide open from when paramedics responded to this situation more than likely. There does look to be a fair amount of damage to it as well, more than likely from when it was boxed in by those police cruisers. Pulling up, I came up the northbound lanes and I could see a truck or an SUV, something along those lines, it looks like it’s been blocked in 360 degrees around by police cruisers.”
“They are containing the scene,” Campbell added. “I don’t see a lot of activity, and that could be because they’re going to protect the chain of evidence until ASIRT can handle the investigation. ASIRT handles all of Alberta’s police involved shootings, so I mean it could be pretty standard in this case.”
Campbell adds, although he can’t say definitively what kind of vehicle the victims were in, it appears to be a Ford F-250.
No officers were injured during the incident.
At this point, police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed any of the events either in Copperfield or in the ensuing police pursuit.
Police say they have no idea what sparked the chain of events, or if drugs or alcohol were factors.
During the investigation, traffic is being re-routed on southbound Deerfoot, through 130th Avenue, eastbound on 52nd Street Southeast and onto Stoney Trail.
