More pipes expected to burst as things warm-up

Calgary fire crews are bracing for a flood of calls, so to speak, as the latest wintry grip on the city eases.

Fire Battalion Chief Allan Ball told 660News, crews are keeping their hip-waiters handy because more waterlines will likely fail when the thaw arrives.

Ball says in the past few days, they raced around the city to shutoff water lines and mop up.

Late Monday night, an underground waterline at Varsity Drive and Shaganappi Trail in the northwest burst; thankfully home and business owners were not impacted.

Plumbers are working at the Senator Burns building at SAIT, to fix a broken pipe.

The Old Bay Store downtown is also dealing with some water issues, after an old sprinkler line failed.

Classes are expected to resume Tuesday at Robert Thirsk High School in the northwest, students were sent home the day before because of a burst water pipe.

The cold snap has also generated more carbon monoxide calls, with furnaces working around the clock to keep people warm.

The Fire Department is urging home and business owners to keep an eye on their property in the coming days and to report any water issues that might arise.
