One person killed in QE2 pileup

One man is dead and five others are injured in a major pileup on the QE2 Highway between Didsbury and Carstairs.
After earlier estimates of 100 vehicles involved, EMS now says it was closer to 20-25 vehicles involved, with road conditions in the area being very slippery and the visibility is poor.
One patient was transported in serious, but stable condition and the other four injuries are considered non-life threatening.
Traffic is being redirected and delays are expected due to high volumes.
Naomi Nania with EMS confirmed it was actually two separate crashes on the highway, but they happened in close proximity to each other.
Westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada are closed at the Minnewanka Turnoff due to an injury collision and they will stay closed for several hours.
South of the city, Highway 2A is closed in both directions and a man has been rushed to hospital after a crash near Aldersyde.
STARS spokesman Cam Heke said the man was airlifted to Foothills Hospital in potentially life-threatening condition but is now listed in stable condition.
“The patient was trapped in the vehicle for approximately 80 minutes prior to being transported by STARS and prior to being extricated from the vehicle” he said.
Sheriff Lance Chalmers with the Ponoka RCMP said conditions are catching drivers off-guard as they can change in an instant.
