Early spring melt a good thing

It’s something that can be seen all over city; pump trucks trying to get water out of areas where it is pooling thanks to the quick rise in the temperature.

The city was scrambling Monday to keep up with about 1,200 calls about clogged drains.

Meteorologist David Spence noted this is the best time for the snow to melt.

“This is exactly what you want to happen because the later the spring runoff happens or the later the snow melts the greater the chances it happens during the rainy season,” he said. “The floods we had last June happened because the snow was melting the very same time the rain was falling.”

He hopes the snow melts slowly and said temperatures just above zero would be best.

For those dealing with clogged drains, the city’s 311 service is busy but if you have water coming at your house the mayor said give 311 a call.

“The ones that are mostly likely to have property damage are the ones we’re going to get to first,” Mayor Naheed Nenshi said.

It could be the end of the week before they are caught up with the volume of calls.
