Excitement is already building for Thursday night’s Rangeland Derby Canvas Auction on Stampede grounds.
Drivers put their name and talent on the line while corporate Calgary ponies up the cash to have their logo on the side of the chuckwagon’s canvas.
The event, which by some is seen as a bellwether for the city’s economy set an all-time records of $4-million total and $15-thousand for an individual canvas back in 2012.
“The Calgary Stampede tarp auction is the single biggest financial windfall for the chuckwagon drivers; it’s basically where we develop about half of our budget for the year,” Professional Driver Mark Sutherland said.
Last year, Sutherland’s father Kelly took the top bid garnering $200-thousand from his sponsor Tervita.
