Fake CRA agents continue to target Calgary’s South Asian community

Fraudsters, pretending to be from the Canadian Revenue Agency, are threatening prolonged jail time to members of Calgary’s South Asian community if they do not pay money they are told they owe to the agency.

The Calgary Police Service said the fake agents call up potential victims, tell them they have ignored written warnings and tell their victims to pay large sums of money to buy prepaid debit cards.

The targets are then told to reveal the card number and the pin code, giving the fraudsters almost untraceable access to the funds.

Police said this type of fraud has been going on in Calgary for about five months.

People who thinks they are being targeted are asked to take down as much information as possible about the person calling and then contact police or the RCMP Fraud Unit at info@antifraudcentre.ca or 1-888-495-8501.

The Canadian Revenue Agency has more tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of fraud here.
