Surgeons’ eyes behave the same as athletes: study

Another first for Calgary.
Researchers with Alberta Health Services and the University of Calgary have found surgeons have the same eye trait as elite athletes!
Dr. Ryan Snelgrove, one of the authors of the study, said they had surgeons and senior level trainees perform surgery wearing an eye tracker.
“Then we compared what they gaze behaviour was, and what their quiet eye behaviour was during the operation. We found that’s it’s true; elite level surgeons have the same quality of quiet eye and gaze behaviour characteristics as elite level athletes do. They have a higher focus of attention on critical structures prior to their movement,” he said.
It’s believed that training new doctors with the quiet eye method will help them advance much more quickly.
