Calgary joins cities across Canada in vigil for Loretta Saunders

A dozen cities across Canada Thursday night will remember Loretta Saunders, a pregnant Inuit woman, brutally murdered in Halifax last month.
A candlelit vigil is being held in every province at the same time to help remember Saunders and call attention to missing and murdered aboriginal women.
Calgarians are welcome to bring battery powered candles to Olympic Plaza at 7 p.m.
Saunders, 26, was described as bright and promising, and was writing a thesis on murdered and missing aboriginal women before she died.
Her body was found dumped on the side of the Trans Canada Highway in New Brunswick on February 13th.
Two people are now charged in her death.
Jason Quinton’s wife was close friends with Saunders; he says this is a small part of a Canada-wide tragedy.
“Statistics show that the amount of missing and murdered aboriginal women are five times that of other Canadian women. Most of these slip through the cracks and are never found, and not much effort put into locating these women,” he said.
Quinton is asking for citizens and government to become more aware and willing to find out what happened to these forgotten women.
