Alberta students top problems solvers

Educators may now have some facts to back up the controversial new way of teaching math in the province.
An international study reveals Alberta students are among the best in Canada and the world when it comes to solving complex problems.
On the computer-based problem solving component of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), Alberta kids tied for top place in Canada and fourth best in the world.
Education minister Jeff Johnson says these students are benefiting from the focus on helping make sense of complex information. He says planned changes to the curriculum, some aimed at returning to basics after parent pressure, should continue to build on these strong results.
The test is conducted every three years by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.
