Council looks into flashing lights on school buses

The city has decided to look into expanding the use of flashing lights on school buses.

The safety issue was brought forward to council Monday, after a seven year old boy was hit by a car getting off a bus in early March.

While all school buses are equipped with the lights, they are only allowed to activate them in a small number of Calgary communities which means cars can pass while they unload passengers.

Councillor Peter Demong says it just doesn’t make sense.

“I would like to explore why it’s just there. Why aren’t we doing it city wide?” he said, “It seems to me a no brainer as far as how to provide extra safety for our children”.

A report will be brought back to council in the fall looking into the ramifications changing the bylaw would have on traffic.

They will also be exploring changing the times playground zone speed limits come into effect.
