Spring runoff advisory issued by province

Calgary may see some localized flooding as the rapid spring melt hits streams and rivers.
Alberta Emergency Alert has issued a runoff advisory that covers parts of southern and central Alberta from Calgary, north to Wetaskiwin and southeast to Medicine Hat.
Sarah Jackson, a spokesperson with Alberta Environment and Sustainable Recourses, said she can understand there may be worry in places like Calgary and High River, that this may be the start of another major flood season, but this is not a panic situation.
“This is just a regular, spring is coming, the snow will start to melt, so you’re going to see that until things dry up a little more,” said Jackson.
As the melting snow makes its way to streams, Jackson said there will likely be some pooling in ditches and low-lying areas, but not any significant level increases in any of Alberta’s major rivers.
She said the weather is also co-operating during the melt this year.
“There is no significant precipitation forecasted for the next five days.”
She said this advisory is more of a reminder to stay alert and any drastic flooding should be reported to the local municipality; call the City’s line at 311.
