A new study finds even busy neighbourhoods are safe for kids walking to school.
Researchers at Sick Kids looked at pedestrian collisions involving children over a period of nine years, and found the safest neighbourhoods had fewer road crossings, and higher population density.
The study’s authors are touting the benefits of walking to school, saying children who do so have been found to perform better academically.
They say when it comes to child safety, parents are both the solution and the problem, because they drive their kids to school thinking it will keep them safe.
However, in doing so, they increase the traffic volume and raise the risk of injury for the children who do walk to school.
