Rats! They’re back in Medicine Hat

The rat problems just won’t go away in Medicine Hat.
Several of the rodents have been spotted at the landfill near the southeastern Alberta city after a single rat was found in a farm yard south of Highway 41A.
The city, Cypress County and Alberta Agriculture are now working to find out how many of the beasts are in the area.
The landfill and a three mile buffer zone have been monitored since 2012 when the problem first reared its head.
However, Landfill Superintendent Paul Nicholson said this group is a new set of rodents, not the same from two years ago.
“This is most likely a group that came in a load somewhere. Probably came in late fall, early winter,” said Nicholson, “dug deep into the landfill and now they’ve reproduced some.”
More bait stations have been set to poison the rats and staff is checking daily for more signs.
The infestation threatens Alberta’s rat-free status.
