Downtown cycle track moves forward

After a marathon meeting, a city committee is recommending a proposed cycle track in the downtown core get the green light.
The city wants to convert almost 10 kilometres of downtown roadway into a network of dedicated bicycle lanes on a one-year trial basis.
Canadian Olympic gold medallist Denny Morrison, spoke briefly in council in support of the cycle lane and says he feels that he has to set an example.
“As an Olympian I feel like I act as a role model for the next generation, and I try to encourage the younger generations to live active healthy lifestyles. So I think, what better for the city to encourage this and for me to encourage the city, than to build a cycle track so everyone young and old has the opportunity to cycle downtown, and live an active, healthy lifestyle that everyone should be living,” he said.
The Calgary Chamber of Commerce believes the plan could be good for businesses large and small and it must be executed in a way that accommodates existing retail businesses along the track.
The matter will go for a full council vote on April 28th.
