A new face for High River’s downtown

It’s going to be a completely different town south of Calgary.

After flooding last June devastated High River, the mayor is looking at the silver lining, saying it’s a chance to redo things the right way.

Craig Snodgrass said plans are in pace to renovate, repair and upgrade the core of the community and they’ll likely start ripping up the streets next month.

“The streets are going to be narrower, the sidewalks are going to be much wider, so the retail shops can have a little display out on the sidewalks, but there’s lots of room for people to move around. 4th Avenue is going to be a shared space,” said Snodgrass.

The plans also call for a reduction in on-street parking and the development of downtown parking lots.

He said the priority is to do things right and not to have a rushed job.

It’s hoped everything will be in place by fall.
