Funding shortage put costly study on shelf for two years

A $4.6-million survey that exposed the extent of the skills gap in Canada has sat away from public eyes for two years because of a lack of funding.

The Globe and Mail, Statistics Canada polled 25,000 employees in 2012 on things like workplace demographics, temporary foreign workers, and future skills shortages.

The data has never been analyzed, because funding was cut short.

Stats Can has had its budget cut by over $29-million in the last two years, and its staff cut by around 18 per cent.

A spokesperson for the company said if someone has funding and wants to carry the data over to the next stage, they’d be willing to work with them.
