CRTC pushing for more basic cable packages

Some anxiety in the T.V. industry, as the CRTC promises a major overhaul to give viewers more choice.

The Globe and Mail reports, the Canadian Radio Television and Telecommunications Commission wants to force cable and satellite providers to provide a bare bones package that customers can add to if they want.

However, companies argue channel bundles actually keep prices low for subscribers and can help give new services a chance at taking off.

The CRTC is also looking into a policy which prevents Canadians from viewing American Super Bowl ads.

The commission says the number of broadcast subscriptions declined for the first time last year as some Canadians chose to pass on paying for any kind of cable service.
