Local restaurant reacts to hold on temporary workers program

A scolding for the food service industry accused of abusing the Temporary Foreign Worker program could be a nail in the coffin for local restaurants struggling to find staff.
Federal Employment Minister Jason Kenney put a hold on the program after reports came out that some fast food chains were not trying to first hire Canadian workers.
This woman owns a local restaurant which employs about fourteen staff and tells 660News she’s been searching high and low for Canadians to work.
“What are the Canadians doing? What are our people doing here; where are they? For three years, I’ve been trying to get a couple of good servers, simple busboy, but I cannot find anybody. Where are these people?” she said.
She said suspending the program not only hurts small restaurant owners, but punishes foreign workers themselves, some who’ve left family and made other big sacrifices to better their lives.
