Horse meat in 2012 scandal linked to Canada

Officials say some of the horse meat in a 2012 European scandal came from Canada.

The Globe and Mail reports, tons of low grade horse meat was passed off as Halal beef by a Dutch businessman and used in frozen dishes like lasagna.

Jan Fasen, 64, is currently in French police custody being investigated for another similar case of fraud.

According to the paper, a paragraph in a Netherlands’ court ruling lists some of the meat’s origin as Natural Valley Farms Inc. in Saskatchewan.

The company’s license was suspended by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in December 2008 because of ineffective food safety monitoring.
