Holiday Monday was also Mountie Day at Fort Calgary.
In May of 1873, the Northwest Mounted Police was founded and the anniversary was celebrated at the military facility.
Kids made pillbox hats and mustaches, watched movies and even wore the iconic red serge for a picture.
For those like Chief Superintendent Kevin Harrison, this is always a special occasion.
“I’m certainly very proud of our heritage, we’re a big part of Canadian history, certainly being a big part of the history of the province of Alberta,” he said. “This fort is really the origins of the City of Calgary.”
He said there was plenty of interest from the young ones in one day joining the force and Chaplain Larry Nicholay said it’s critical to keep youth involved.
“To see the youngsters who are over here, putting on little red jackets and looking model policeman,” he said. “We have an RCMP inspector here with them, a couple of sergeants, they personify the force as it is today.”
