Eastbound Airport Trail extension in question

Despite its $295-million price tag and the controversy surrounding its development, the Airport Trail Tunnel, which opened on the weekend, is getting rave reviews.

But many drivers are wondering when Airport Trail will be extended further east.

Eventually Airport Trail should tie into the northeast Ring Road, but Ward 3 Councillor Jim Stevenson said he has no idea when that might happen.

Stevenson said under the deal signed with the Calgary Airport Authority, before work can begin on that, the city is required to build overpasses at 19th and Barlow at a cost of $50 million.

“What we’re saying to the airport is if we don’t have the money and they’re not necessary yet, let us open two lanes until such time as we are ready to build those overpasses,” he said.

The President of the Calgary Airport Authority Garth Atkinson said he’s in constant talks with the city and is confident in the next 5 to 10 years, plans to complete the complex transportation infrastructure network will be done.
