Some predict one day water may become more valuable than oil and here in Calgary, we’re waiting for rain for our yards and gardens.
However, very anxiously awaiting some moisture is a dedicated group of Grow Calgary volunteers who have planted vegetable crops for the Calgary food bank and now need water, a lot of it.
Farm Manager Paul Hughes tells 660News on Tuesday, competition for a water supply around Canada Olympic Park is fierce and Grow Calgary is co-operating with the City for a water hydrant meter, but until then, they’re bringing the H20 in, manually.
He says, “We are looking for a water hauling sponsor, or somebody who might be able to help us fill up our on-site water tanks and we’re targetting a fairly substantial capacity of water, but right now, we’ll almost take a glass of water, we’re so desperate!”
Hughes adds, another Grow Calgary aspect they’re most proud of is the diversion of waste from the landfill because they also upcycle.
He says, “We’ll take materials a lot of people like the construction industry, materials they throw away and we’ll try to use them on site, so we built a complete greenhouse using nothing but recycled materials.”
If you have any leftover construction materials or supplies to donate, they’ll gladly use them.
And, if you can help fill up their on-site water tanks, check them out on Facebook or growcalgary.ca.
The organization is also looking for volunteers and donations of all types.
