Calgary honours D-Day anniversary

The Calgary War Museum held a ceremony Friday honouring the 70th anniversary of D-Day, with the main focus on the impact of the Royal Canadian Navy.

10,000 Canadian sailors hit the beaches of Normandy on June 6th, 1944, one of them being Rt. Cpt. Bill Wilson.

He was a seaman and anti-aircraft gunner with the navy.

He said fear was not an option.

“We knew it was crucial day, we knew we could lose the war or win it that day,” he said. “Our concern was for the soldiers they had to do the job.”

Others like Navy man Gordie Rowan, who was part of the landing craft infantry, hopes young Canadians will remember the men who served and sacrificed.

“They can think about us, but the main thing is the guys who didn’t come back,” he said.

Canada suffered 1,074 casualties on D-Day and lost 359 brave souls.
