City dignitaries will gather Friday at noon along 12th Avenue to officially mark the opening of Barb Scott Park.
Extensive community engagement determined a green space was needed in the former school yard of Carl Safran School.
The ceremony will include speeches from Mayor Naheed Nenshi, Councillor Evan Woolley, Calgary’s Director of Parks and the President of the Beltline.
Officials chose the park as the site of the ‘Chinook Arch’, a piece of public art that’s garnered its fair share of criticism.
Barb Scott was one of the city’s longest serving aldermen, she served 24 years on city council representing ward 8 and passed away earlier this year.
Scott, who was re-elected 7 times, died of heart failure.
A community celebration will take place late Friday night from 8:00pm-11:00pm.
It will include activities, on-site food trucks and local live music.
The artist team, Creative Machines, will also be on hand to officially unveil the arch.
