Eight Calgary schools that were part of a PC election promise likely won’t be built on time after the province had to do away with the P3 partnership to build them.
Infrastructure Minister Wayne Drysdale says there was only a lone bidder to construct the 19 Alberta schools and the price to build them was actually $14-million more than a public sector comparison price, so they scrapped the P3 plan.
The Calgary schools are five public schools in Copperfield, Evanston, New Brighton, Royal Oak and Saddle Ridge and two separate schools in Auburn Bay, and Evanston, as well as a replacement school for the Francophone district in Martindale.
The target date to complete these schools is now 2017, instead of the fall of 2016.
In the 2012 election, Alison Redford promised 50 new schools and 70 school modernizations by the fall of next year.
A statement from the Calgary Board of Education says it’s “assessing the impact of this announcement on CBE’s capital projects and student accommodation plans,” and that “the needs of students are the CBE’s first priority.”
