White ash trees along Stephen Ave. to be replaced

About a month after white ash trees were planted along Stephen Avenue, a big chunk of them have to be replaced.

The trees have been growing for six years in a nursery and were used to take the places of 52 brandon elm ones along the street which had deteriorated.

The city’s urban forestry lead Jill-Anne Spence said about two-thirds of the trees didn’t leaf out, while another third grew fine.

“You can expect some tree loss when you’re planting trees because when they’re dug out of the nursery, they lose about 90 per cent of their root stem, but this is really an anomaly, it was very unique that we had that much tree failure,” she said.

With the Calgary Stampede coming up, Spence said it’s critical to get the trees planted to beautify the landscape of the street.
