Emotions sky high as YYC opens their newest runway

The Stampeders weren’t the only one’s celebrating a touchdown Saturday afternoon.

The first plane has landed at Calgary’s newest runway.

Aviation consultant Rick Erickson said the investment allows the largest commercial flights to pass through YYC.

“For every ten dollars the City of Calgary economy creates, one dollar is coming through the airport, so an investment in a runway facility like this, and a terminal facility as well, will ensure that aviation continues to be a major contributor to the Calgary economy,” he said.

Erickson said this allows Calgary to compete with every airport in western North America.

A 767 took off for Tokyo at around 2:00 p.m.
