The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission will allow bars, restaurants and lounges in Calgary to begin liquor service at 8 a.m. during the Stampede, at at 7 a.m. on parade day, which is Friday, July 4th.

Bill Robinson, who is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the AGLC tells 660News, the pilot project is part of a comprehensive review of the province’s liquor laws.

Robinson who is a former police officer doesn’t think the decision will create any additional social problems for police, with operators adhering to the various rules already in place regarding the service of all types of alcohol.

The Vice President Western Canada with Restaurants Canada, Mark von Schellwitz applauds the decision, promising licensees will continue to be expected to offer service in a socially responsible way to ensure the safety of their patrons.

Calls to expand liquor service hours in the province began to grow after a number of bars and pubs were allowed to open at 5 a.m. back in February for the men’s gold medal hockey at the Olympics.

The last time liquor laws in the province were updated was back in 2008.
