While you’re soaking up the sun this long weekend, Calgary Transit will be launching its new real-time bus information systems.
The first buses featuring audio and visual cues announcing major stops along each route will be on the streets come Monday.
The project is still in its early testing stages.
Although the technology is on every bus in the fleet, which is about 1000, transit users on every fourth bus will see and hear the new stop announcements.
The automated service will sound similar to the info system heard on the C-Train.
In the meantime, Chris Jordan, transit’s manager of strategic planning, says as the project grows, the info system will be seen on more and more buses.
“In the next few months, we’ll be rolling that out to a simultaneous test on the whole fleet. We’re looking for customer feedback–where they see issues. This is the opportunity for us to test the system, test the load on the system, and make sure the announcements are working well. So we want our customers’ feedback.”
Jordan adds they are also working on an accompanying app, which is due out at the end of the year.
The project costs $15 million.
