Canmore closes trail after aggressive bear encounter

A warning if you plan on venturing into bear country this long weekend.

A trail in Canmore is closed after a bear charged at a cyclist Wednesday night but luckily the bear retreated when the man yelled at it.

A spokesman for the province said this cyclist was prepared for the worst and others should be too.

“Carry bear spray and know how to use it; walk in a group and make noise as you go; keep your pet on a leash; and don’t wear ear buds of anything else that could pot impede your ability to sense the presence of wildlife,” he said.

The area that’s closed in Canmore is north and east of the Peaks of Grassi near the Three Sisters parkway.

Bear traps have been set up in an attempt to capture and remove the aggressive animal.
