Bear attacks a hunter in Alberta

A hunter has been attacked by a bear in northeastern Alberta.

It happened just before 10:00 p.m. Sunday in Smoky Lake County.

STARS landed at the intersection of Range Road 170 and Township Road 602 and airlifted the 60-year-old man to hospital in stable condition.

STARS spokesman David Fairbanks said bear attacks are not as rare as you might think.

“In the summer months for a bear attack specifically, I’d say we have a handful of those each year. We did fly out to a couple this year already and a handful last year,” he said.

It’s believed the man was hunting lawfully on private land last night when he shot the bear and followed it into the bush, but the bear attacked the man before it died.

Fairbanks couldn’t go into details about the man’s injuries, but says bite marks and broken bones are common in animal attacks.
