Majority of Canada’s First Nations have not reported finances under new transparency act

Nearly two-thirds of First Nations bands still have not submitted financial information more than a week after Ottawa’s deadline.

The Financial Transparency Act was to collect details, including how much leaders are paid, by July 29th.

But according to the Globe and Mail, information has only come in for 224 of Canada’s roughly 600 First Nations.

A spokesperson for the Aboriginal Affairs minister said the law states 120 days after the deadline, the government will have to take action with any groups still withholding.
