After outrage at the salary of a Vancouver area First Nation leader, Kwikwetlem Chief Ron Giesbrecht said he is actually one of the lowest paid chiefs in Canada.
Last week a new federal law forced First Nation Bands to publicly report their finances.
The numbers show Giesbrecht earned less than $5,000 dollars last year as Chief, but was also paid a $800,000 bonus serving as the band’s economic development officer.
He tells the National Post only four band members have since asked him to step down as chief and in a newly launched YouTube PR campaign Giesbrcht said he still has the support of most members.
