Damage from a series of thunderstorms that rumbled across southern Alberta Wednesday afternoon is still being accessed with Airdrie among the hardest hit centres.
Airdrie’s Mayor Peter Brown called 660News to report hail the size of golf balls damaging not only a number of homes and vehicles but also produced some isolated flooding.
No injuries were reported and during the storm, but the Calgary Fire Department gave a Twitter shout-out to their colleagues in Airdrie who were scrambling to deal with weather related calls.
Environment Canada reports most areas impacted by the storms had golf ball sized hail but hail the size of tennis balls fell in Standard, east of Strathmore.
The thunderstorm in Airdrie also produced a Gustnado in Calgary.
A Gustnado, similar to a dust devil, is produced by the outflow of a thunderstorm. The one that was spotted near the intersection of Stoney and Metis Trial in the northeast was short lived and no damage was reported.
660 Meteorologist David Spence said stormy weather could return to Calgary and area late Friday afternoon, so people should continue to keep an eye on the sky.
The phones of local insurance agents will likely be ringing off the hook in the coming days as people file claims, those seeking compensation are being reminded to document the damage and to be patient.
