Every hockey season, the Central Zone Referees Committee loses 30-40% of its officials.
A lot of attention has been shed on the abuse officials receive. And while that is prevalent in the sport, a spokesperson says that’s not the only reason why referees quit.
“That hasn’t changed over the years,” Craig DeCoursey, chairman of the CZRC told 660News. “The abuse is part of the equation, but we’re also dealing with kids who are 13 to 18 years of age in their first job, going to university, getting a girlfriend or boyfriend. There’s lots of reasons we lose officials. Abuse is part of that, but it’s not the only (thing).”
While the exact number of officials needed is not known, there’s always a need to fill games from novice to junior.
DeCoursey said it’s a chance for officials to make their own schedule, get exercise, and gain some life experience.
