Prentice announces Michener Centre will stay open

Premier Jim Prentice has been in power less than a week and he’s managed to shake things up further.

Prentice has announced the Michener Centre in Red Deer will not be closing after all.

He says it’s inhumane to move severely disabled Albertans from their homes.

“The Michener residents I met today and back in August live here within, I think it’s fair to say, live here within a life-giving community organized around their special needs,” he said. “And in many cases their quality of life depends upon the comfort and the familiarity of this place, for people who have lived here essentially all of their adult lives.”

He says any patients who wish to stay at the centre, may do so.
